What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

It’s been a while since Nikki and I have packed up our tent and headed out into the great outdoors. Our favorite camping spot has always been the scenic western North Carolina mountains, a place we’ve cherished for years. But now, with Hurricane Helena’s devastating aftermath still fresh in our minds, we’re hesitant about returning.

We know the people there are still grappling with the heartbreaking loss of homes, loved ones, and cherished memories. It feels almost selfish to think about enjoying a leisurely camping trip in the midst of such suffering. Yet, there’s a part of us that yearns for the peace and tranquility that only nature can provide.

Finding suitable camping spots might be a challenge, as many areas may still be inaccessible due to damage. We’ll need to do some research and perhaps even consider alternative locations within the region. But we’re hopeful that by supporting local businesses and communities, we can contribute to their recovery efforts in our own small way.

As we prepare for our trip, we’re reminded of the importance of being mindful and respectful. We’ll make sure to leave no trace, minimize our impact on the environment, and support local initiatives whenever possible. Perhaps our presence can offer a glimmer of hope and a reminder that nature’s beauty can endure even in the face of adversity.
