When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

I’ll never forget the moment when adulthood hit me—the first time I had to start paying my own bills. There’s something about seeing your name on a utility bill that makes you feel like you’ve officially entered the world of responsibility. The first time I paid my electric bill, it was like a rite of passage. I thought to myself, “This is it. I’m really an adult now.”

But even with all these adult responsibilities, I’ve always been a child at heart. I have a quirky sense of humor, and if you hang around me long enough, you’ll definitely catch me laughing at my own jokes. After all, who better to appreciate my humor than me? I believe life’s too short to take everything so seriously. Sure, I’m handling bills, making decisions, and checking off my to-do lists, but I’m also out here trying to do flips with the children—on days when my body allows it.

One of my favorite things to do is get out there with children, playing games, running around, and just having fun. There’s something about letting loose and embracing that carefree spirit that keeps me grounded. Being an adult doesn’t mean we have to stop enjoying life. We can still laugh, play, and have fun without being a stick-in-the-mud.

It’s not just with the children, though—I love having fun with Snatcher too, especially when we’re out camping. There’s something about being out in nature that brings out the childlike joy in both of us. We play around like we did when we first went camping as children with our parents. From setting up the tent, gathering firewood, and making s’mores, it’s like we’re reliving those fun childhood moments all over again. And let me tell you, nothing beats laughing around a campfire, sharing stories, and acting silly with the person you love.

For me, staying connected to that childlike joy keeps life exciting. Even with the bills, responsibilities, and everything else that comes with being an adult, I’m still going to laugh at my own jokes, run around like a child, and cherish those fun camping adventures with Snatcher. Because being an adult doesn’t mean I can’t keep having fun—it just means I get to do it on my own terms, and that’s a win in my book!

The first time I really felt like an adult was when I had to pay my first round of house bills. I opened the mail and saw the water bill, the electricity bill, and the internet bill all sitting there like they were personally offended I hadn’t paid them yet.

I sat down, calculator in hand, trying to remember which limb I’d have to sell to afford it all. Then I made the mistake of looking at my electricity usage graph. It felt like a judgmental chart from a health app—only instead of telling me I walked too little, it was telling me I was apparently running a nightclub with all the lights I left on.

After I finally paid everything, I sat there in the dark, vowing to live my new adult life by candlelight to avoid another hit. It was the moment I realized that adulthood isn’t about freedom—it’s about learning to negotiate with your bills like they’re a mafia boss you owe money to.
