Do you ever see wild animals?

Sometimes, life surprises you in the most unexpected ways, and it’s often in those moments when we feel closest to nature and its Creator. Just the other day, I had one of those unforgettable experiences while standing at my kitchen sink. I was washing dishes, the warm water running over my hands, when I looked up and saw movement out of the corner of my eye.

A wild fox walked straight out of the woods and into my backyard. For a moment, I was frozen in awe at its beauty and grace. Its reddish-brown fur shone in the sunlight as it cautiously moved, its ears perked up as if listening to everything around it. Without missing a beat, I called out to Snatcher, “Come quick! You’ve got to see this!” Together, we stood at the window, quietly observing the fox as it explored for a few moments before disappearing back into the woods. It was a simple yet profound reminder of how connected we are to God’s creation, even in our own backyard.

A Symphony of the Night

This wasn’t the first time nature caught us by surprise. On one of our camping trips to Dan Nicholas Park in North Carolina, we had another encounter that left us in awe. That night, we lay in our tent, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the forest. Suddenly, the hoot of an owl broke through the stillness. Its call was deep and rhythmic, echoing through the trees.

I couldn’t see it no matter how much I searched the dark canopy above, but its presence was undeniable. There’s something magical about hearing an animal you can’t see—it’s as if nature is reminding you that not everything needs to be visible to be appreciated. It was a moment that made me feel small in the best possible way, part of a bigger world teeming with life.

Exploring the Mini Zoo

The next day, we visited the park’s mini zoo, a highlight of our trip. This zoo is special because it focuses on showcasing animals native to North Carolina, particularly those from the mountainous regions. From playful otters to majestic birds of prey, the exhibits were both educational and inspiring. Seeing these animals up close gave us a deeper appreciation for the wildlife that calls this state home.

We captured our entire experience at Dan Nicholas Park, including the mini zoo, in a video for our YouTube channel. We hope you’ll check it out and feel inspired to visit the park yourself or perhaps reconnect with nature wherever you are.
