How are you creative?
Editing YouTube videos is one of those tasks that seems straightforward on the surface: cut out the bloopers, clean up the audio, and slap on an intro. But when your creative juices aren’t flowing, editing becomes a challenge that can make even the most exciting footage feel flat.
For me and Snatcher, editing is where the magic happens. Sure, we could let the video “ride” as-is, but where’s the fun in that? We see our videos as more than just clips stitched together; they’re stories waiting to be told. Stories about our outdoor adventures, the peace of nature, and the joy of discovering God’s creation. And when we’re in the editing zone, those stories come alive.
But what happens when the creative zone feels out of reach?
The Struggle of Stagnation
When we’re low on inspiration, the temptation to “just get it done” looms large. It’s easy to fall into the trap of settling for the basics—removing awkward pauses and stitching the clips together. While this approach gets the job done, it doesn’t capture the heart of our adventures. Editing is our chance to show viewers the beauty we see in camping under the stars, hiking rugged trails, and stepping away from life’s daily chaos. A lack of creativity risks losing that connection.
How We Push Through
When the creative block hits, we’ve found a few strategies that help reignite the spark:
1. Reliving the Moments
We’ll often rewatch our raw footage—not just for technical review but to relive the adventure. Hearing the crunch of leaves underfoot, the crackle of the campfire, or the laughter we shared brings back the emotions of the trip. That’s usually enough to spark an idea for how to convey those feelings to our audience.
2. Tag-Team Editing
One of the benefits of working with Snatcher is that we can tag-team edit when one of us feels stuck. His perspective often helps me see the footage in a new light and vice versa. Together, we can brainstorm transitions, overlays, or music choices that breathe life into a scene.
3. Experimenting with Tools
Sometimes, creativity comes from trying something new. Whether it’s testing a fresh color grading technique, experimenting with slow motion, or adding creative text overlays, these little touches can elevate a video and reignite our excitement for the process.
4. Remembering the Mission
At the heart of every video is our mission: to inspire others to step outside, enjoy nature, and see the beauty in God’s creation. When we keep that purpose in mind, it reminds us why we love editing in the first place.
The Payoff of Creative Edits
Creative editing transforms a simple camping trip into an adventure that resonates with our viewers. It’s the slow pan of a sunrise over the mountains, the overlay of scripture that ties the beauty of nature to God’s word, or the perfectly timed music that stirs emotions. These moments elevate the content, turning it into an experience that lingers long after the video ends.
So, while editing without creativity may be the easy route, it’s not the one we choose. We strive to put our best into every video—not just for the sake of the content but for the sake of the viewer. Because when creativity flows, it allows others to see the world through our eyes, one outdoor adventure at a time.
And that, to us, makes all the hard work worthwhile.
