What is the last thing you learned?
Life has a way of teaching us lessons in the most unexpected ways, and our latest van build experience was no exception. As we work on converting our Dodge Ram ProMaster, *Glo*, into a fully functional camper van, every project comes with its own set of challenges. But through it all, Snatcher has reminded me of an important mindset shift: looking at setbacks as a “glass half full” instead of dwelling on the negatives.
One of the biggest lessons came when we installed our Maxx Air Fan. We were excited about this project because proper ventilation is essential for our van life adventures. Everything seemed to be going well—until it rained. That’s when we discovered our first attempt wasn’t quite as watertight as we had hoped.
At first, I’ll admit, frustration started to creep in. After all, who wants to deal with a leaky roof? But Snatcher, always the problem solver, immediately reframed the situation. Instead of seeing it as a failure, he saw it as an opportunity to learn. He reminded me that the glass was half full—at least we discovered the leak before we hit the road! This gave us the chance to fix it properly rather than dealing with a major water issue later.
This experience reinforced something I’m constantly learning: obstacles aren’t meant to break us, but to teach us and prepare us for what’s ahead. If we had gotten discouraged and given up, we would have missed out on an opportunity to improve our skills and ensure our van build is solid.
In life, it’s easy to focus on the negatives when things don’t go as planned. But what if we chose to see setbacks as stepping stones? What if we saw challenges as ways to grow rather than reasons to quit? God allows us to go through difficulties, not to harm us, but to shape us. Sometimes, a little leak in the roof is just a reminder that we’re still learning, growing, and getting better.
So, whether you’re tackling a van build, facing an unexpected challenge, or dealing with a roadblock in your own journey, remember: the glass is half full. Every struggle is a lesson, every mistake is a stepping stone, and every setback is just a setup for a better outcome.
