Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home.

There’s something about loading up for a trip that’s further than we’ve ever gone before—it feels like stepping into a whole new adventure. For Snatcher and me, the furthest trip from home was all the way from North Carolina to the beautiful white sandy beaches at Fort Pickens Campground in Florida.

The drive itself was exciting, knowing we were headed somewhere different and special. When we finally arrived, the view took our breath away. The sand was like powdered sugar, soft and white, stretching out against the turquoise water. It felt like a little piece of paradise waiting just for us.

Setting up camp at Fort Pickens was a joy. There’s something calming about being surrounded by nature with the ocean nearby, knowing we could explore both history and scenery all in one place. We spent time walking the beaches, taking in the sound of the waves, and just soaking in God’s creation.

Of course, no trip with us is complete without a little adventure—and a little mischief from Snatcher. One evening, as we walked to toss out the trash, we heard a rustling in the brush. My heart skipped a beat when the noise turned into a low “moo-ooh” kind of sound. Before I could even process it, Snatcher grinned and started picking at me, whispering, “That’s an alligator!”

Now, I’ll admit—I got a little scared! The Florida wild is no joke, and when you hear strange noises at night, your imagination can run wild. But Snatcher couldn’t help himself; he laughed and teased me all the way back to the campsite. I gave him “the look,” but honestly, it made the moment even more memorable.

That’s what I love about our adventures—there’s always a mix of awe, laughter, and just enough silliness to keep things fun. Even when I get spooked, Snatcher finds a way to make me smile and remind me that these little experiences are what make camping trips worth remembering.

Looking back, our Fort Pickens trip stands out not just because it was the furthest we’d traveled for camping, but because it gave us those once-in-a-lifetime moments: walking barefoot in soft white sand, sleeping under the stars, and laughing over an “alligator” that probably wasn’t there at all.

Every time we go further from home, we come back closer to each other—and that’s the real treasure of traveling together.
