There is something equally exhilarating and humbling about standing in the middle of a completely empty cargo van. It’s a blank canvas of metal and potential, but if I’m being honest? It’s also a giant puzzle that we haven’t quite solved yet.

As we officially kick off this next Van Life project, the excitement is high, but the “to-do” list is even higher. We’ve done our research, watched a thousand YouTube tutorials, and scrolled through endless Pinterest boards—but nothing beats real-world experience. That’s why we’re turning to you.

The “Blank Canvas” Phase

We’ve spent the last week measuring, re-measuring, and then measuring again just for fun. We want this build to be more than just a place to sleep; we want it to be a functional home that can handle everything from rugged mountain passes to coastal camping adventures.

However, we know that the best designs usually come from the mistakes (and successes) of those who have gone before us. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a full-time nomad, we want to hear your thoughts.

Where We Need the Most Help

While we have a general vision, there are a few specific areas where we’re still scratching our heads:

• The Layout: Fixed bed or convertible dinette? We love the idea of a permanent garage space, but is the lost living space worth it?
• Electrical Essentials: How much solar is actually enough? We’re planning to work from the road, so power is a priority.
• The “Must-Haves”: What is the one item in your van you can’t live without? (And what’s the one thing you regret installing?)
• Climate Control: Diesel heater vs. Propane? Or should we just buy extra blankets and hope for the best?

If you’ve spent even one night camping in a van, you probably have a piece of advice that could save us a headache down the road. Maybe it’s a specific brand of insulation, a clever way to store spices, or just a reminder to “buy a better shovel.”

We want to document this journey authentically—the sawdust, the wiring mishaps, and eventually, that first sunset from the back doors. But before we drive the first screw into the subfloor, we’re hitting the pause button to listen to this incredible community.
